Basketry

Guide: Susi Nuss

A note from Susi:

I ran the About Basketry site from July 1998 (when About.com was The Mining Company) until September 25th, 2001. On that date, 300 sites were cut from the network without notice to facilitate a change in the business model. I had personally assembled the information and built the site from the ground up into something that had become a valuable resource to basketmakers all over the world. It was a tremendous loss to see all I had spent three and a half years to build, die so suddenly.

About Basketry included resource lists on individual basketmakers, basketry suppliers selling kits, patterns and supplies at retail and wholesale, along with information about native natural materials identification, harvesting and processing. There was news of basketmaking conferences, exhibits and other events specifically for basketweavers. The site featured a graphics collection with clipart, web page sets, backgrounds, wallpaper, screen saver images and photographs. There were holiday projects, free printable coloring pages, printable crafts projects like gift tags, placecards and stationery, along with fun stuff such as greeting cards, online games, find-a-word, jigsaw and crossword puzzles. I gathered a great deal of information on books and publications. I had written book reviews and feature articles detailing how to locate out of print or hard to find basketry books.

Readers had come to appreciate the feature articles that included free basket patterns, illustrated step-by-step instructions and crafts projects that I had written or recommended. Many people routinely made use of the tips, techniques and tutorials that helped beginners, as well as accomplished basket artists, learn how to make baskets or improve their skills. Many readers were no doubt able to visit one of the historic or contemporary basketry collections in a museum, gallery, or exhibition that I recommended. Others were likely able to attend a class or workshop and plan their vacation travel on my recommendation. We all seemed to enjoy the newsletter, discussions forum and chat sessions.

About Basketry had grown to be one of the most highly visited site on the Internet for the art and craft of basketweaving. All that ended on September 25th, 2001. It would be a shame to see all of this information, and the community that had developed around it, go away forever. I will do my best to post some of what has been lost to a new personal site. In this time of transition, I invite all my former readers and any new interested basketmakers to take a look at the sites below. I set up a public discussions forum right away and I will work to get the other site up as soon as I can.
