Guide: Marco den Ouden

A note from Marco:

Yours truly was an About Guide from August 1997 until September 25, 2001. During that time I evolved from a mutual fund investor to a stock investor, reading extensively and furthering my knowledge of the market.

It was a fun four years and I thank About.com for the opportunity they gave me to develop my writing skills and to reach an increasing audience. My stint with About led directly to an invitation to write a book for Macmillan Canada which appeared in bookstores across Canada in late November 2001. You'll find a blurb on the book linked below.

About's sudden and unexpected termination of 300 of their guidesites, representing well over a third of their content, came as quite a surprise to the Guides affected. But it also represents an opportunity - one which I've seized by developing this very website. I' also moved Investing: Canada here as a subsite, but have now moved on to re-focus it as The Break Out Report, a website focusing on Canadian stock investing from a CANSLIM approach.

My About.com exposure led to a book deal. I was asked to write a book called The 50 Best Science & Technology Stocks for Canadians shortly after leaving About. It was part of a series called The 50 Best Stocks. I ended up writing two editions, one for 2002 and another for 2003. The series was discontinued after that. Both books are still available at Amazon.com.

In November 2002, I partnered with friend and mentor Ken Ballard to launch a subscription-based investment newsletter called The Break Out Report. We are now in our fourth year of continuous publication.

In 2005 I also partnered with Lesley Scorgie, a young financial whiz from Calgary, Alberta to put together a new website, Rich by Thirty, as well as publish the Rich by Thirty Newsletter. The objective is to teach sound financial principles to young people.

I have also launched two more websites - both under construction as of June 2006. They are When to Sell a Stock based on my ebook of the same name and Newsletterama, a guide to investment newsletters. The latter is a quarter completed as of June 2006 and profiles 50 newsletters. There will be several hundred profiled when it is complete.
